The origin of the oranges that Mercadona sells in its supermarkets from November

Mercadona launched the campaign national orange next November and hopes that this course will be extended again until the beginning of September 2025. The Valencian distribution company is starting the Spanish citrus season thanks to the collaboration of suppliers from different autonomous communities.

The supermarket chain chaired by Juan Roig collaborates closely, as it has done in recent years, with 13 specialized suppliers, which allows it to guarantee a continuous supply of oranges as long as production is available.

Specifically, Mercadona will market oranges from crops located in Andalusia, the Valencian Community, the Murcia region and Catalonia thanks to the stable agreements it maintains with companies such as Martinavarro, Bollo, Fontestad, Frutas Tono, Frutinter, Anecoop, Alcafruit , Lasarte, Agronostrum, AM. Fresh citrus fruits from Spain, Llusar Torres Group, Vicente Giner and Nufri.

Although the last national oranges can usually be purchased until August, when national production comes to an end, Mercadona’s last national campaign managed to extend it until the beginning of September. This has been possible thanks to good coordination and planning with suppliers from different autonomous communities, which is why this year the company hopes that there will also be national oranges until September.

During the 2024-2025 season, the company is expected to market 130,000 tonnes of national orange from the production areas in three formats, now available in all Mercadona stores. These formats are bulk orange, 3 kilo mesh orange, 5 kilo mesh orange and in the form of freshly squeezed natural orange juice from the Fruits and Vegetables section of Mercadona.

“Mercadona’s commitment to national oranges demonstrates the company’s commitment to quality and offering a healthy assortment, promoting the consumption of citrus fruits,” explains the supermarket chain. So much so that they constantly collaborate with their customers to know what they expect when consuming an orange in terms of its own attributes, such as size, flavor or color, and other aspects, such as shelf life or shelf availability.
