Rebel offensive in Syria: Israeli expert assesses the situation in the region

The war in Syria, which has lasted almost 14 years, remains one of the most complex conflicts of our time. Israeli analyst Yigal Levin emphasizes that the Syrian conflict is a tangle of interests in which the conflicting ambitions of local and international actors intersect.

Map of the parties in conflict.

There are currently several key forces operating in Syria:

Assad regime. Backed by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) controls much of the country. This sector is marked in pink on the map.

ISIS terrorists. Despite the weakening, Islamic State militants continue to carry out ambushes and attacks, mainly in desert areas. Its area of influence is marked in black.

The Kurds and the United States. Territories controlled by Kurdish forces, Arab tribes, and US Marines are indicated in yellow. Here special attention is paid to the protection of oil fields.

Rebels in the south. The moderate opposition, supported by the United States, is based in the desert area at the crossroads of Syria, Iraq and Jordan.

Rebels in the north. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian National Army (SNA), under the auspices of Türkiye, are actively fighting the Assad regime.

Levin clarifies that these are only the main participants in the conflict. Each area has its own factions, including Arab opposition forces operating under the auspices of the Kurds and the United States.

Main factors

The expert points out that, despite the apparent dominance of the Kurds in the northeast, the situation is not so clear. For example, the Assad regime’s security forces have long operated in Arab cities such as Raqqa. This former capital of ISIS was liberated with the support of the United States and the Kurds, but remains an area of tension.

long war

According to Levin, the war in Syria has claimed the lives of more than 500,000 people and the end of the conflict is still not in sight. The Turkish-backed rebel offensive only exacerbates the situation and adds new layers of tension.

The conflict in Syria remains unresolved and every step taken by participants only adds complexity to an already confusing situation.

Previously, Kursor wrote that Russian military specialists were captured in Syria.

HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) militants in Syria captured Russian military explosives experts.
