65% of cosmetics sold in Russia contain substances dangerous to health – NHSPP

The use of cosmetics sold in Russia is a dangerous activity, since 65 percent of these products contain dangerous substances.

This information was published on Saturday, September 28, by the RIA Novosti agency in reference to a study by the National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights (NSZPP).

At the same time, no information on contraindications for use was found in 76 percent of the products. Experts also found that one in five products is sold expired or without an expiration date.

Another major violation was the lack of information about the composition of the products in Russian. The study states that in more than 90 percent of cosmetics the composition is indicated in the Latin alphabet and the names of the chemical substances are usually written in abbreviations. Furthermore, a third of cosmetics are sold without any information about their ingredients.

“Taking into account the trend of consumer demand towards economical consumption, the proportion of counterfeit cosmetic products made from cheap raw materials is growing. The proportion of imports of low-quality products from abroad is growing,” – stated the press service of the National Health Commission.

It is especially worrying that manufacturers of counterfeit and counterfeit cosmetic products use substances and components that are dangerous to health, including for children, and that affect the development of the fetus in pregnant women.

As an urgent response, it is proposed to introduce mandatory labeling of cosmetic products, as well as to make changes to the technical regulation of the Customs Union 009/2011 “On the safety of perfumery and cosmetic products.”
