The leader of the Junts and former president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, reminded, this Saturday, the Spanish government, without expressly citing it, that the approval of the amnesty law in Congress, which does not apply to their case, is not enough “to repair the damage” suffered by the separatists on October 1, 2017, the day on which the illegal referendum on secession organized by him took place and which the Consell of the Republic commemorates today in Arenys de Mar (Barcelona).
“Spain must reflect on the 1-O and the alteration of the democratic game,” said Puigdemont during his parliament by videoconference during the commemoration of the 1-O, after the interventions of Lluís Puig and Toni Comín, also remotely. “The amnesty law is insufficient to repair the damage caused to citizens [aquel día]. The amnesty law is a first rectification, but it is not an initiative of Spain,” he said.
After defending that the 2017 referendum “is and was a worthy”, “legal” and “liberating” act, Puigdemont assured that “independence is inclusive, unlike trade unionism”; and warned that “there can be no normal [como defiende Salvador Illa, presidente de la Generalitat] as long as these conditions exist [de represión] it forces some of us to fight with one hand [atada] on the back.”
Although he did not make express mention of the negotiation that Junts maintains with the PSOE for the approval of the 2025 general state budgets in Congress, nor of the financing agreement of the socialists with the ERC, the former regional president criticized that Illa and those who until recently were members of the Junts, ERC, want, in their opinion, to underestimate the Generalitat. “They are trying to transform the Generalitat into a flat encephalography agency”, assured.
