China, Brazil and 8 other countries called to prevent the use of nuclear weapons

The joint statement was released on September 27 after a ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The statement reads: “We call for an end to threats to use weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.” The document was signed by China, Brazil, Bolivia, Turkey, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Zambia and Algeria.

These countries expressed deep concern about the possible escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and emphasized that civilian infrastructure, including nuclear power plants and other energy facilities, should not be targeted by military operations.

Recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week that Russia could use nuclear weapons in the event of massive air strikes on the territory of his country. He also noted that any attack against Russia carried out with the support of a nuclear state could be perceived as joint aggression.

On September 25, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky accused Moscow of preparing an attack on Ukrainian nuclear power plants and criticized the proposals of China and Brazil, which are trying to mediate to resolve the war on terms unacceptable to kyiv. Zelensky emphasized that forcing Ukraine to sign a peace agreement on those terms amounts to colonialism.
