The Australian government has passed a bill banning children under 16 from using social media.
Oku.Az Championat.com reports that the document will come into force in one year, at the end of 2025.
The law provides for a total ban on the registration and use of social networks by persons under 16 years of age. This means they will not be able to use TikTok, Reddit, X and other platforms even with their parents’ permission.
At the same time, the restrictions will not affect children who are already registered on social networks.
The social networks themselves will have to monitor compliance with the law. The companies face a fine of 49.5 million Australian dollars (about 32 million US dollars) for violating the law.
According to surveys, the majority of the country’s inhabitants (77%) supported the government’s decision.
