WHO reports more than 13 cases of monkeypox in Africa

Since the beginning of 2024, at least 13,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox (mpox) have been reported in the African region. This was reported on November 21 on the website of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Three countries – Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda – account for about 97% of all cases reported this year, he said. WHO is providing countries with critical technical and financial support to respond effectively to outbreaks.

“Gabon, which, like South Africa, Guinea, Cameroon and the Congo, is no longer experiencing active community transmission of mpox, is estimated to provide another example of how early interventions can bring significant benefits.” – says the WHO material.

On November 16, the first case of mpox infection (clade I) was reported in the United States. According to doctors, the patient recently returned from East Africa, where the mox outbreak continues.

On October 30, the first case of detection of a new strain of mpox in the United Kingdom was known. This was reported by the British Health Services Agency (UKHSA).

In August, the head of the WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared a health emergency due to mpox and called on the international community to join in the collection of more than 2 million vaccines, recalls Izvestia.
