A Russian couple, detained in Sri Lanka for staying on the island without a visa for a year, will be deported to the Russian Federation on November 5.
“A trial has been held in the case of violation of immigration laws by a Russian family detained last week by Sri Lankan police. Due to his decision, our citizens were placed in a preventive detention center. The embassy managed to secure his transfer to a deportation center in Colombo. From there they will be delivered to Mattala International Airport, from where they will fly to Tyumen on November 5.” — Russian ambassador to Sri Lanka Levan Dzhagaryan told TASS.
The diplomat added that “at the request of the embassy, the relevant government bodies of Sri Lanka, within the available capabilities, are making efforts to provide Russian citizens with decent detention conditions in places of detention.”
“The embassy is in constant contact with the detainees” – said.
Earlier it became known about the arrest of a Russian family in the Kandy region of Sri Lanka, who were illegally on the island for almost a year. As noted by the Daily Mirror, tourist police in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka’s central province detained a 39-year-old Russian man and a 32-year-old woman for violating immigration laws and staying in the country without a visa.
The Russian diplomatic mission in Colombo warned Russians in the island state about mass document checks on foreign citizens and asked them to check the validity of visas and work permits. In case of delay, diplomats urged to immediately contact the Sri Lankan migration authorities to resolve the issue and notify the embassy.
