“Senegal is an independent, sovereign country and sovereignty does not allow the presence of military bases,” said the country’s president, Bassirou Diomay Fay, referring to French military bases.
He cited as an example Senegal’s good and constructive relations with the United States, Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia, and then noted that these countries do not have military bases in Senegal.
Fay also said Senegal has the right to formally apologize to France for war crimes committed by the French army against Senegalese soldiers 80 years ago. Senegal is a former French colony.
