Iran calls for urgent UN Security Council meeting over Israeli attacks on Lebanon

Iran has asked to organize an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in light of Israel’s attacks in Lebanon, the Iranian Permanent Mission said in a statement.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns in the strongest terms these cowardly acts of aggression. Given the serious implications for regional and international peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the Security Council to unequivocally condemn Israel’s actions in the strongest possible terms. “Furthermore, Iran calls on the Security Council to convene an emergency meeting to address Israel’s terrorist aggression and the ongoing atrocities committed by the Israeli militant regime in Lebanon and throughout the region.” – says the statement from the permanent mission.

Last Monday, the General Staff of the Israeli Army gave the name “Northern Arrows” to the offensive operation launched in Lebanon. Since last week, the Israeli Air Force has been carrying out massive strikes against Hezbollah targets in different areas of Lebanon. Several targeted airstrikes were also recorded in Beirut, as a result of which high-ranking Hezbollah commanders, as well as the movement’s secretary general, were eliminated. Hassan Nasrullah. To date, the Israeli military has reported attacks on several thousand targets. Observers note that Israel has not attacked Hezbollah with such intensity since the Second Lebanon War in 2006.

Hezbollah responds with rocket attacks aimed primarily at northern Israel, but the range of rocket attacks has increased significantly in recent days. Every day, dozens of volleys are fired against Israeli settlements, during which residential buildings are hit. In particular, a missile was launched in the Tel Aviv area and was shot down by air defense systems.

Tensions rise amid statements by the Israeli army about preparations for a ground operation in Lebanon.

Following the results of the 2006 Israeli-Lebanese war, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 1701, which provided for support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon, the simultaneous withdrawal of Israeli troops from the south of the country and the deployment of forces. of the Lebanese government and the UN there. According to this resolution, the presence of paramilitary forces other than those belonging to the Lebanese army or UN forces is prohibited south of the Litani River. However, during these 18 years, Hezbollah has restored its infrastructure in southern Lebanon and has been bombing northern Israel every day for 11 months.

The situation on the Israel-Lebanon border worsened after the start of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
