Responsibility for the attack was attributed to rebels from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group. The incident occurred during a major offensive by rebel forces in the northwestern part of the city of Aleppo, which is under the control of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
The rebels captured the territory for the first time in several years, intensifying protest sentiments in the country. In response, Russian and Syrian military forces attacked rebel positions near the Turkish border. These military actions were the largest since the ceasefire and ceasefire agreement between Russia and Turkey in March 2020. The agreement was aimed at ending a decades-long conflict that has forced millions of Syrians from their homes.
