An unruly passenger on a United Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles had a violent outburst during which he broke a plastic tray and kicked the seat several times before other passengers intervened to contain the situation.
The incident occurred Nov. 16 on United Airlines Flight 502 from Austin, Texas, to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which was carrying 76 passengers and five crew members, the airline said in a statement to USA TODAY. on Wednesday.
Video recorded by another passenger shows the man standing on the seat, repeatedly kicking the back of the seat and destroying a plastic tray table.
Gino Galofaro, who filmed the incident, told Los Angeles television station KABC that he and other passengers gathered to restrain the man after they saw “the flight attendant walk by and do nothing.”
“I took this video very quickly and I saw the flight attendant walk by and do nothing,” Galofaro told KABC. “No one on the plane was doing anything. So I got up and started restraining him. Two other witnesses were given zip ties. the flight attendant.”
“We had to restrain him with zip ties and then strap him to the seat,” he added.
Galofaro told online content distributor SWNS that the incident occurred while the flight was about 40 minutes from the Los Angeles airport.
