Boris Johnson proposed an alternative to the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson believes that if a truce is reached between Ukraine and Russia, a multinational peacekeeping mission should take responsibility for ensuring security along the demarcation line.

This is reported by the Telegraph.

According to Johnson, peacekeeping forces from several European countries could participate within the framework of the peace agreement. He stressed that he does not consider it necessary to send combat troops to fight Russia, but noted that the role of international forces in the peace process must be foreseen.

“We should not be sending combat troops to fight the Russians, but a multinational European peacekeeping force must play its part in ensuring peace,” Johnson said.

He added that an operation of this scale could not be carried out without the UK’s involvement and highlighted the need for NATO countries to agree what security guarantees would be acceptable to Ukraine as part of peace negotiations.

Johnson mentioned Ukraine’s possible entry into NATO as one of the options. This would provide protection in the event of an attack, in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Charter, which states that an attack on one member of the alliance is an attack on all. However, many NATO countries have expressed doubts about Ukraine’s accelerated entry into the Alliance.

As an alternative, Johnson proposed deploying NATO troops as part of a UN peacekeeping force along a possible ceasefire line in Ukraine. This would provide Ukraine with protection similar to Article 5 guarantees, but without the need for direct NATO intervention. But an attack on those troops could lead to the activation of Article 5.

“We need to be clear about what security guarantees we think are necessary,” Johnson said, adding that NATO’s Article 5 guarantee has remained the best model for protecting peace in Europe for the past 80 years.

In addition, Boris Johnson stated that Ukraine’s Western allies must develop a concrete assistance plan to not only support the country in the fight, but also achieve its victory. The key to this, in his view, is to continue attacks on military targets deep in Russia and support Ukraine with powerful military assistance, including through the Lend-Lease mechanism, as well as providing long-term security guarantees. .

Recall that Kursor wrote that European countries are strengthening measures to prepare the population for possible military threats from Russia. The aggravation of the situation due to the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has forced several European countries to reconsider their approaches to civil defense.
