Hospital 12 de Octubre inaugurates its new central building with the transfer of the first pediatric patients

The pediatric consultations are the first to be installed in the new central building of the 12 de Octubre Hospital, which completed its work last December and is now starting to receive its first patients. The complete transfer will be carried out in phases and is expected to involve around 1,000 children and adults admitted to the health center.

In addition to the smallest, the children’s and adults’ hospitalization floors will also move, and finally the Obstetrics-Gynecology and Neonatology floor. Before moving admitted patients, there will always be supervision by health professionals, who guarantee the safety of the process.

The construction of the new general residence 12 de Octubre represents a definitive step in the remodeling and modernization of this hospital center. Now we will have to continue the planned planning, which includes the demolition, once empty, of the building which until now was the headquarters of the hospital, and which is crowned with a huge sign with the name of the center. .

Moving an entire hospital, with hundreds of patients and all its healthcare and support staff, is not an easy task. This process, which begins now and which will last several weeks, required very precise planning.

In fact, after the pediatric consultations, it will be the turn of the mental health areas, as well as the rest of the clinical services and care areas of the children’s area, such as hospitalization, surgery or intensive care. Immediately afterwards, explains the Hospital, the complete change of the current General Residence, where adults are cared for, will begin. This transfer planning will end with obstetrics-gynecology and neonatology.

Throughout the period and simultaneously, all central and general support services will be launched, such as radiodiagnosis, pharmacy, nuclear medicine or cooking, among others. The programming has been configured to interfere as little as possible with usual care activity and to also ensure patient safety, particularly in the case of those admitted at the time of transfer. They will always be accompanied by professionals from their place of origin to their destination and by a member of their family, if they wish.

Once the building work was completed last December, during these months work was carried out to condition the spaces, legalize the facilities and implement the necessary high-tech clinical equipment, equipment and furniture. Equipment currently in use and classified as transferable will also be distributed across the floors of the new building and hospital as it still has a useful lifespan.

This work is part of the Comprehensive Infrastructure Modernization Plan for the New 12 de Octubre Hospital. The decoration and design of the new hospital uses “soft and friendly colors that invite tranquility,” explains the Ministry of Health.

Its more than 700 conventional hospital rooms have been designed to provide a comfortable stay for patients, who can be accompanied by their families. The building has more than 100 beds for critical patients. It also has 41 operating rooms, including four hybrids of more than 70 square meters, and large personalized medicine and high-precision spaces, focused on the diagnosis and treatment of very complex diseases.

This model of care is also repeated in the pediatric consultations that have started operating, located on two different but consecutive floors, within the module intended for the care of women and children. They are located in spacious and bright spaces, with comfortable furniture suitable for the smallest patients.

The total transfer of the General Residence also includes that of the neighboring sanitary areas, necessary to free this building, begin its dismantling and thus free the plot it currently occupies to create large gardens and green spaces. A rest area that will be enjoyed not only by admitted patients who can leave, but also by Madrid residents and those who will visit them on October 12.

The first movement in these areas was the relocation of the oncology medical day hospital to a new and modern infrastructure, in which the highest quality care is already provided to cancer patients and their families. At the same time, care approaches to fight cancer have been renewed, with very positive results which have an impact on their well-being and their development.

The New Oncology Day Hospital also has a large space for testing new therapeutic targets acting against different types of solid tumors, as well as 21 consultation rooms – including four nursing rooms – and various rooms for administration of treatments.
