what they can and cannot do

More and more people are deciding to use cycling either as a means of transport or as a sport. With this trend, there are many doubts arise about what cyclists can and cannot do on the roads.

THE General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) published a guide with 20 key rules so that cyclists can travel in complete safety and respect the rules of road coexistence. In a context where the use of bicycles is increasing, the DGT seeks to reduce accidents and guarantee the safety of all road users.

Among the most important recommendations, the DGT emphasizes that cyclists must ride on the cycle path whenever available, as well as avoiding the use of headphones and cell phonesdevices that distract the cyclist and increase the risk of an accident.

Another fundamental rule is obligation to use lights in low visibility conditions, such as in tunnels or at night, allowing the cyclist to be seen by other vehicles.

Furthermore, it is recalled that the use of helmets are compulsory for children under 16 years old and recommended for everyone, especially on interurban roads. At intersections, cyclists must yield to motorists. pedestrians on crosswalks and use extreme caution at intersections and roundabouts.

For cyclists who ride in groups, the DGT allows them to do so in row of twoalthough it is advisable to form a single file in case of heavy traffic or on narrow roads. Cyclists should also warn of their maneuvers with arm signalsfor example when turning or braking suddenly.

Another important aspect is the alcohol levelwhich is the same for cyclists as for drivers of motor vehicles. This means that they should not exceed 0.5 grams per liter of blood, or 0.25 mg/l in exhaled air. As for minors, they can only be transported by bicycle if they do not exceed the age 7 years and they must be in an approved and safe seat.

The regulation also provides for sanctions for non-compliance, which range from 100 and 1,000 euros depending on the offense. Driving on sidewalks or pedestrian zones when prohibited can result in penalties, as can failing to obey traffic lights or signs.

Finally, the DGT calls the caution and courtesy on the road, promoting respect and coexistence between cyclists and other users. With these 20 rules, the institution hopes to encourage safe and responsible behavior, remembering that the bicycle is just another vehicle and is therefore subject to the same traffic rules.
