Ukraine sent a letter to NATO countries asking them to accept it into the alliance at the organization’s next meeting in Brussels, Reuters reported. The appeal was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga.
“I urge you to approve the decision to invite Ukraine to join the alliance as one of the outcomes of the NATO foreign ministers meeting on December 3-4, 2024.” – says the letter.
Sibiga insists that “the invitation should not be seen as an escalation.” According to him, Russia “will lose one of its main arguments” for continuing the military operation, realizing that “Ukraine’s membership in NATO is inevitable.”
Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Olga StefanishinaHe told the agency that kyiv sees a lack of consensus on Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Ukraine’s entry into the alliance under current conditions would “put an end” to the peaceful resolution of the conflict and would inevitably involve the bloc’s countries in hostilities against Russia. Ukraine’s desire to join NATO was one of the reasons for the start of the military operation, and its neutral and non-aligned status was one of Moscow’s demands to resolve the conflict, RBC recalls.
