Birkenhead Town Hall’s tower clock will reportedly now chime once every hour instead of the previous 15-minute interval.
This decision was made after one of the local residents complained about the volume and frequency of the clock’s sound. An investigation by local authorities confirmed that the noise level exceeded permitted standards.
Some city residents opposed this decision, pointing out that the sound of the clock has become part of their daily lives. Philip Barton, local heritage campaigner, said many local residents appreciated the more regular clock and were “living with it”.
It should be noted that Birkenhead Town Hall was built in 1887 by local architect Charles Ellison using Scottish granite and sandstone from the local Storeton quarry, which has since been filled in.
