The board of directors and councils seal their collaboration for a thousand new social housing units in rural areas

Accumulate a thousand social housing units in the next six years outside the cities. This is the commitment that the Junta de Castilla y León and the nine provincial councils made this Monday with the aim of increasing the public park in rural areas with the help of an initiative that addresses “particularly” to young people, for whom the administrations involved are considering a bonus on the purchase price.

This is reflected in the agreement signed today in Palencia between the ten administrations and which also provides for the provision of social rental of 88 houses in the municipalities of the Community. Two protocols which consider housing as “a determining element for the establishment of the population in the rural world”. “No one will stop settling because they don’t have” housing to settle in, declared the president of the Commission, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, after the signing with the nine presidents of the Castilian and Leonese councils.

As for the first of the measures – announced two years ago by the councilor of the area, Juan Carlos Suárez Quiñones, and which is being made official today – it aims to remove for sale a thousand social housing units built by the Government of Castilla y León until 2030 with an investment of 150 million euros. The initiative also provides for a 20 percent bonus for young people under 36, which will be borne equally by the regional executive and the councils, at an estimated cost of nearly 30 million euros. This is a measure that the Commission “has already successfully tested in several municipalities, including Aguilar de Campoo, in Palencia”, recalled Mañueco.

Concerning the protocol focused on rental, this corresponds to the housing that the Régie rehabilitates in rural areas as part of the program ‘I’m going to live again’ to give them a second life. Buildings that were once the school, the doctor’s house or the teacher’s house and which are disused are being renovated to house homes. Measures have already been taken for more than 500 homes. According to the protocol signed today, 88 of them will enter the social rental stock after an investment of nine million.

The objective of these protocols is to be “useful and effective to establish the population in the territory, guarantee emancipation and that the elderly can continue living in their homes”, said Mañueco, who also thanked the nine deputations their “involvement and commitment” in these initiatives to “continue moving forward” by generating “opportunities and development and helping to energize vast rural areas” so that they are “a benchmark for a place where people live better every day and where there is a high quality of life,” he concluded.
