An unusual evaluation was returned to Italian schools

Italian authorities have reintroduced behavioral grading in schools, a return to practices established under Benito Mussolini. The rule, known as vote di condotta, was first introduced in 1924 and was not repealed until the 1970s. Now the government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has decided to reinstate this practice as part of education reform.

Middle and high school students will receive a behavior score ranging from 1 to 10. Those who score less than 5 will not be able to advance to the next grade. For further studies, students with six points will have to write a work on the topic “Active citizenship and solidarity.”

In addition, the new regulations provide for social works and fines of up to 10,000 euros for adolescents for violence against teachers. In recent years, the number of attacks on teachers has increased by 110% compared to the same period in 2023. A ban on the use of smartphones in Italian schools was introduced in July.

Georgia Meloni noted that the new measures aim to restore respect in Italian educational institutions. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara supported raising the profile of teachers, while the principals’ association approved the new law. However, the opposition was critical of the reform.

“Cursor” also wrote that all of Italy was shocked by a man’s live confession of killing his mother.
