Oriol Junqueras He is set to return to power in Esquerra Republicana after his false resignation last May after being the candidate with the most votes in the National Congress that the Catalan party is holding this weekend. But for that, he will have to win again in the second round, since he has not reached the 50% necessary to be declared, once again, president of the ERC. Xavier Godas He will be his rival in the second round, which will be held next Sunday, December 14.
The candidacy of Militància Decidim led by the former president of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, and that of New Esquerra Nacionalled by Xavier Godàs, were the two who obtained the most votes in the National Congress this Saturday but, as none of them exceeds 50% of the votes, they will compete to take the lead of the party in the second round on December 14.
Junqueras and Godàs obtained 48.3% and 35.3% of the votes respectively and surpassed the candidacy of Foc Nou of Helena Solà (12.6%), and the two candidates who will present themselves in the second round will have the possibility of modifying the components of their candidacy by 50% while maintaining the candidate for president.
81.35% of ERC activists, or 6,533 members, voted electronically at the party congress to elect its president and a new leadership, out of a total of 8,030 activists called to vote.
The second round
In the second round, which will take place in two weeks, they will participate Militància Decidim And New Esquerra Nacionalthe two candidates having obtained the most votes this Saturday. Up to seven days before, however, certain modifications could be presented, with the following limitations: both the candidate for the presidency of the party and half of the members of the list must be maintained. . In this scenario, the movements that Foc Nou could carry out are of particular importance, whose proposal a priori has more points of coincidence with that of Nova Esquerra Nacional.
This electoral process, framed in the thirtieth national congress of the party, is celebrated with the Republicans at off-peak times: ousted from the Generalitat, with around 1,500 fewer activists compared to 2019 and the loss of half a million votes compared to in that same year.
The reconfiguration of the ERC will be decisive for Catalan and Spanish politics, since it will have in one hand the key to the governability of Catalonia and, in the other, seven key votes in Congress to support the government of Pedro Sánchez .
