In the National Assembly, the possibility of a slight strategic shift in LFI

Let’s say it right away: the deputies of La Francia Insumisa (LFI) in the National Assembly are not yet there to apologize for being there. The great objective of the “rebels”, currently seventy-two (three less than in the previous legislature), continues to be perceived as the first opponents of the government of Michel Barnier, described as “without democratic or popular legitimacy” by Mathilde Panot, deputy for Val-de-Marne and president of the LFI group at the Bourbon Palace. But, even more than towards the government, it is always towards Macronism and Emmanuel Macron that most of his attacks are directed.

For the “rebels”, power has not returned to the National Assembly, but remains in the hands of the President of the Republic. [Emmanuel] Macron cannot allow Barnier to fail, because he himself invented the rule of non-censorship a priori when appointing him, assures Manuel Bompard (Bouches-du-Rhône), national coordinator of LFI. Therefore, it is on Macron that we must increase the pressure. »

Consequently, the “rebels” focus their energies on the impeachment procedure of the President of the Republic. The initiative, launched this summer, has no chance of succeeding given the conditions that must be met. And he is not there to reassure those who, among his partners in the New Popular Front (NFP), fear, at least formally, the attitude of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s troops in the chamber.

“We are entering another era”

“It is not a sterile opposition, it is an opposition that makes the idea that we can do things differently come true. That the course of the country depends on political decisions. Our programs are simply not compatible.”, believes Mathilde Panot.

However, we believe we detect, in this pre-parliamentary session, in the speeches of the “rebel” executives, the possibility of a slight strategic shift. “I don’t regret what we did, but we entered another era”assures the president of the LFI group. Which ? “There is the destituent phase, where all the bodies of society disintegrate. And there is a constituent phase, to achieve an alternative order”describes Manuel Bompard.

And explain that, along the way, the second phase must surpass the first. “They stole the elections from us, we were the ones who should have been called to form a government. “It changes things in terms of legitimacy in the Chamber: we must show what we would do in his place, not only being in the opposition but trying to build majorities on certain objectives.”explains Mathilde Panot. The Val-de-Marne deputy also talks about building bridges with the left-wing groups in the Senate to build a true parliamentary shuttle, so that symbolic and dead-end victories are transformed into definitive adoption of texts.
