“Flooding Spain” by elDiario.es, finalist for the Climate Journalism Awards

The Climate Journalism Awards, awarded by the European Journalism Center and supported by the Google News Initiative, have selected as a finalist the project “Flooded Spain”, an investigation by elDiario.es which reveals that more than a million households in Spain are located in areas at risk of flooding, a vulnerability that could increase with climate change due to the greater frequency of torrential rains.

These awards, which reward excellence and seek to promote quality journalistic coverage of the climate crisis, highlighted the project “Flooded Spain”, carried out by Pau Rodríguez, Victòria Oliveres and Raúl Sánchez, as one of the best works in material for visualizing climate data. category. The research highlights the growing threat that flooding poses to the Spanish territory, thanks to a comprehensive approach that combines rigorous data, interactive visualizations and testimonies from people affected by these extreme floods.

By analyzing the locations of more than 12 million buildings, the research shows that at least 4.3% of Spanish homes are at risk of flooding. Furthermore, it denounces how the lack of regulation has facilitated the urban development of thousands of homes in areas at risk of flooding throughout the country, which has generated a compensation bill of 7 billion euros in three decades.

The awards jury highlighted that the research stands out for developing a “powerful interactive tool that provides unprecedented access to detailed data on the flood vulnerability of every house and building in Spain”.

In addition to elDiario.es, media such as Süddeutsche Zeitung, BBC and Le Monde were also nominated for these awards. The “La España Inundable” project has already been awarded the Vicente Verdú Awards for Journalism and Innovation.
