The State Duma adopted in the first reading amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, introducing liability for dangerous driving. The speaker of the lower house of parliament, Viacheslav Volodin, said that in the second reading deputies will propose amendments that will toughen penalties for reckless drivers.
“Unfortunately the statistics are disappointing: the number of traffic accidents has increased again. In 2023, 132.5 thousand accidents with injuries occurred in Russia, 4.5% more than in 2022. They killed 14.5 thousand people (+2.3%) and injured 166.5 thousand (+4.3 %). “It is obvious that the liability of reckless drivers on the roads who deliberately violate traffic rules must be tightened.” – Volodin noted.
As the parliamentarian emphasized, “the bill approved in the first reading proposes to fine these reckless drivers from three to five thousand rubles, and in case of repeat offense they will be deprived of the right to drive vehicles for a period of one to three months. “
“But we will discuss these rules in second reading, taking into account the need to refine them to tighten them.” – said.
Volodin also recalled that “the rule on dangerous driving was introduced into traffic rules in 2016, but there is still no adequate punishment for this type of behavior on the roads, which threatens the life of both the driver himself and other road users. via”.
