25-meter-deep sinkhole leaves more than 20 families homeless in Aranjuez

A chasm, more than 25 meters deepforced residents of a neighborhood in Aranjuez to evict almost a year ago. Meanwhile, as the hole continued to grow, the municipality tried to fill it with mortar, a measure which had no effect and which cost more than a million euros.

Ignacio García Toribio, town planning advisor of the Aranjuez town hall, emphasizes that, according to the studies carried out, the origin is due to “a paleo meander of the Tagus”. Neighbors report that “they didn’t give us time to do anything, only to harvest what little we could.”

More precisely, there is more than 20 families affected and some claim they had to earn their living. María, one of those affected, was pregnant at the time of the expulsion and remembers that “we were in the car for 24 dayswithout any help and without anything.”

Now and with the approval of a technical reportthey will have to say goodbye to their homes forever, because because of the “risk of falling, must be demolished”said Garcia Toribio. The demolition will take place in 10 days.

But it’s not the only structure under threat. Near the affected property is four other people at riskand the neighbors fear the worst: “Four other buildings are in the same danger.” Indeed, they explain that cracks began to appear in the walls. This is why the Aranjuez City Hall is carrying out investigations to check if they are safe.
