Starting with the Huawei Mate XT, the first triple smartphone

In a few minutes, the gesture becomes natural: you unfold the Huawei Mate XT once, then again, to transform it into a large tablet. Visual comfort then becomes unprecedented for such a nomadic object.

But the pleasure is tinged with bitterness as soon as we know the price of this smartphone, presented at the beginning of September and which we were able to take in hand, on Tuesday the 1st.Ahem October: if it was marketed in France, “It would probably exceed 3,000 euros”says a spokesperson for the Chinese brand. A prediction that we may not have the opportunity to verify because, until further notice, the Mate XT is reserved for the Chinese market. However, here are our first impressions.

Nice in the hand

When folded, the size of the Mate XT is surprisingly small: its length and width are comparable to that of an average smartphone. Although it is about a third thicker, it easily fits into a large pocket. When you use it folded, it is as uncomfortable as a large smartphone: it is no more or less painful to handle with one hand, and reaching the top of the screen requires such acrobatic contortions as with an iPhone 16 Pro. Max or a Samsung S24 Ultra, for example.

When you deploy the Mate But your hands find their way alone, so the maneuver quickly becomes simple and reassuring.

Once fully opened, the smartphone fits well in the palm of your hand: its weight is relatively evenly distributed and very contained (about 300 grams), compared to that of an average 10-inch tablet. Its particularly thin thickness (around 4 millimeters) gives the impression of containing a large sheet of metal. In short, we quickly forget that we are manipulating a transformable object to concentrate on our screen.

The screen of a tablet

the companion This is evident when placed next to a smartphone, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10, whose screen measures almost the same size as that of the iPhone 12 to 16.

However, all applications are far from taking advantage of this screen format. The pages of news sites, for example, are generally optimized for reading on smartphones. As for social media content, it generally benefits little from the space gained.
