“They did not meet the conditions”

Madrid City Council will remove from its streets private rental bicycles without a fixed base, after having also done so with scooters and without having renewed the corresponding licenses of the companies responsible for providing this service.

As reported Europe Press sources from the field of Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility, this Monday September 30, deadline for authorizations that Madrid City Hall granted for the deployment of electric bicycles without a fixed base and authorizations for the provision of this service will not be extended.

Madrid City Hall has obtained implement bicimad in the 21 districts with 611 bases and 7,500 bicycles and they indicated that when authorizations from private operators were obtained, bicimad had 258 bases in 15 districts and 2,964 bicycles.

In March 2022, Madrid authorized six companies to deploy 2,802 electric bikes without a fixed base: BiciMAD Go (EMT), Idbrik Spain (Ridemovi), bird, The fastest, Mount Dott And Lime.

From now on, authorizations will not be extended because operators “they did not respect the conditions set for the distribution of 2,802 vehicles”. Concretely, 1,999 bicycles should be distributed within the M-30 and 1,197 bicycles outside the ring road.

Farewell to controversial scooters

This follows last month, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martinez-Almeidaannounced that Madrid City Hall will withdraw the authorization of the 6,000 scooters from three companies that could circulate on its streets, considering that the agreed conditions are not met and will withdraw them before October.

“We urged the delegate of the Environment sector to begin the procedure of revoking the authorizations of the city’s scooter concession companies (…) We did this under a series of strict conditions, intended to guarantee the compatibility of travel and circulation. by scooter, but above all guarantee integrity and that there is no risk to the health of citizens,” he indicated.

The system developed by the Town Hall limited scooters located inside the M-30 to 3,600 and 2,400 in the rest of the municipalityestablishing a ratio of 10 scooters per 10,000 inhabitants, but the Town Hall could not confirm this distribution due to the lack of information sent by the companies.

One of the main problems with renting scooters in the city is improper parking in unauthorized places. The new authorization model introduced a key improvement to solve this problem: the company has had technological developments in its applications to force customers to park only in the zones authorized for it in the Center district.

The authorizations, for a period of three years, have been reduced to three companies with the aim of reducing the number of vehicles deployed on the streets of Madrid. It was limited to 6,000 scooters (2,000 per operator). Dott, Lime and Tier Mobility were the companies that received the highest score when evaluating the award criteria.
