Swedish furniture and home decor chain Ikea has taken another step forward in its commitment to sustainability and responsible consumption. The company has launched “Preowned,” its own new platform for buy and sell used furnitureexclusively of its own brand. This project seeks to compete with the large platforms of the sector such as Wallapop, Vinted and thousand advertisements, where the bulk of this booming market is currently concentrated.
Laura Durán, general manager of business development and sustainability at Ikea, explains that the new platform seeks to offer customers “a safe and convenient way” to buy and sell second-hand furniture. “You go to the website of Ikea “second hand” and you start buying and selling with other users,” explains Durán, highlighting the company’s commitment to the circular economy and sustainability.
The launch of “Preowned” follows other major brands, such as Zara and Decathlon, which have begun to explore the second-hand market, driven by a change in consumer habits. According to recent data, interest in reuse increased by 90% over the past three years. In this context, Ikea is not only seeking to satisfy growing demand, but also to be competitive in a sector that has so far been dominated by other applications.
Testing of the new service will continue until the end of the year in cities in Madrid and Oslowith the intention of gradually extending it to all countries where Ikea is present. As on the Ikea website, the platform will allow users to search for items nearby, agree on prices and collection points, thus facilitating transactions between individuals.
Thus, Ikea reaffirms its commitment to the environment and sustainability, while consumers benefit from a new option to give a second life to their furniture, without sacrificing the quality and trust that the Swedish brand represents.
