Western Azerbaijan Chronicle: Agyargan, Agyokhush, Agyokhush and Aggiraq: Traces of Turkish History

Within the framework of the West Azerbaijan Chronicle project, a story titled “White Place Names: An Unforgettable Map of West Azerbaijan” was prepared on Baku TV by journalist Asgar Ibrahimov.

In today’s plot information was provided about the toponyms Aghyargan, Aghyokhush, Aghyokhush and Aghgiraq, which were subjected to the “terror of name change” of the Armenians.

It was stated that throughout history the lands of Western Azerbaijan have had a rich cultural heritage and place names of ancient Turko-Oghuz origin. However, as a result of political changes in these areas in recent centuries, many place names were changed or completely eliminated by Armenians.

Agyargan is the name of a mountain in the Vayk district, Pashali, i.e. Azizbeyov, from the Deraleyaz district. The name of this mountain with a height of 2,528 meters is mentioned in Armenian sources as Agyorgan.

Agyokhush is the name of a pass in Basarkechar i.e. winter camp of Sultan Ali/Canahmed village of Goycha district, Vardenis district.

Agyokhush – was a village in Basarkecher, i.e. Vardenis district of Goycha district. In 1831, 192 Azerbaijanis lived in the village. However, there is no information about those who later lived in the town. The villagers were forcibly expelled by the Armenian State in 1988.

Aggiraq – was a village in Garanliq, i.e. Martuni district of Goycha district. Although the ancient name of the village was Aghgiraq, it was later fixed as Alikir, Aligraghi, Aligraq village in Armenian sources. Until 1828 only Azerbaijanis lived here. After the Treaty of Turkmenchay, Armenians were moved to the village of Aggiraq from the Alashkert and Van regions of Türkiye in 1829-1830, and Azerbaijanis were deported. On the territory of the village there are historical monuments of the 8th-9th centuries related to the Turks. On January 3, 1935, the name of the town was changed to Astgadzor.

At the end it was stressed that just as history is not forgotten, the lands and homelands are not forgotten and remain engraved in the blood memory of the people and the nation: “The attempts of the Armenians who want to alienate these places from time to time “From time to time historical names fail, of course, the Turkish-Oghuz names of our Armenian lands, the historical truths, the bitter history of the villages we lost, in short, the indelible traces of Western Azerbaijan will last forever.”

In general, the study and promotion of toponyms, oiconyms, oronyms and hydronyms belonging to Western Azerbaijan is not only a reality of today, but is very important for future generations to be owners of our native land. Because they reflect the history, ethnography and geography of the local population. The prepared plot examines the history and etymology of Western Azerbaijani toponyms modified by the Armenians and also provides information on the origin, meaning and subsequent fate of place names.

It should be remembered that the goal of the Western Azerbaijan Chronicle project is to preserve and popularize the name of our historical and ancient lands, as well as the deportation of Azerbaijanis by Armenians, place names that existed in those territories, but their names have been erased, countless examples of underground and surface material culture are revealed: ancient settlements, necropolises, mounds, remains of castles, palaces and fortifications, caravansaries, bridges, funerary chests, tombstones, statues of horses and rams, temples, churches, mosques, pyres and hearths . , and facts confirming that the area is a pure Oghuz-Turk settlement are communicated to the world community.

Also the president Ilham Aliyev Regarding Western Azerbaijan, he said: “The map of the beginning of the 20th century shows once again that Western Azerbaijan is the historical land of Azerbaijan, the names of cities and towns are of Azerbaijani origin and we know very well that Azerbaijanis on the territory of present-day Armenia throughout history people have lived. Now the main task is “to make it known to the world community”, it is the promotion of the duties arising from the Concept of Return developed by the West Azerbaijan Community according to their opinion. .

Furthermore, it aims to illuminate the thoughts of historians and researchers about Western Azerbaijan and the life history of the people who were deported.
