Strong earthquakes occurred in the Philippines and off the islands of Tonga.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred in the Philippine Sea, 153 km northeast of the city of Sorsogon, on the island of Luzon (Philippines), reports the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Academy of Sciences from Russia.

The epicenter of the earthquake recorded at 00:20 (Moscow time) on Wednesday was located approximately 56 km east of Catanduanes Island (an island province of the Philippines in the Bicol region).

Depending on the intensity of the shaking at the epicenter, the seismic event is considered “destructive.”

The United States Geological Survey estimates the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9. According to their data, the origin of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 was recorded in the Pacific Ocean, 328 km northeast of the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, the city of Nuku’alofa (Tongatapu Island), reports the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The epicenter of the earthquake, recorded on Tuesday at 11:06 p.m. Moscow time, was located approximately 184 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Pangai, on the island of Lifuka, in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Based on the intensity of the shaking at the epicenter, the earthquake is considered “devastating.”

The United States Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.6. American seismologists also recorded a second earthquake in the area with a magnitude of 4.7.
