How does taking vitamin D supplements affect heart health?

Scientists from China’s Jinyun Food Laboratory, together with their colleagues in the United States, found that taking vitamin D supplements significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, especially in people with vitamin D deficiency.

Oku.Az it is reported with reference to Gazeta.ru.

The scientists analyzed the results of 99 previously published studies on the effects of vitamin D on cardiometabolic health. In total, more than 17 thousand people participated in these studies.

Taking about 3,320 IU of vitamin D on an empty stomach daily has been found to help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and insulin levels. The most pronounced effect was observed in representatives of non-European populations, people with low basal levels of vitamin D, people with a normal body mass index and people over 50 years of age.

The researchers also noted that longer-term interventions (taking supplements for three months or longer) and increasing doses to optimize cardiometabolic health outcomes in certain population groups produced sustained results.

The researchers cannot yet identify the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation. They plan to conduct more research to clarify this.
