The environment in Gorlovka will be improved: the cemetery of the former chemical plant will be liquidated

In Gorlovka, Donetsk People’s Republic, they are preparing to liquidate a chemical waste depot located on the site of a former chemical plant.

As reported by the State Environmental Policy Committee under the direction of the RPD, the event will be held within the framework of the region’s socioeconomic development program and the federal effort to eliminate accumulated environmental damage.

This facility was included in the list of the “General Cleaning” project developed by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation and approved on behalf of the President of the Government of the Russian Federation in 2021.

“The main goal of this event is to eliminate the negative impact of the waste dump of the former Gorlovka chemical plant on the environment. Work is currently underway on the preparation of design documentation for the liquidation of this facility.” — quotes the DAN agency.

The publication recalls that the chemical plant stopped operating in the early 1990s, but chemical product residues that cause serious damage to the environment are still stored in the territory.

The execution of the area cleaning project will eliminate or minimize the negative impact of substances on the state of atmospheric air, water bodies and soils.

The Gorlovka Chemical Plant was built in the 30s of the last century; Explosives, rocket fuel and household chemicals were produced there. After its closure, the plant continues to harm the environment: on its territory there are cemeteries that store hazardous chemical waste.

These include mononitrochlorobenzene, known as “blood poison”, TNT, acids and even unidentified chemicals. The total amount of hazardous waste stored is almost 2 thousand tons.

Previously EADaily reported that a girl wounded during another shelling in Gorlovka tried to help a mortally wounded teenager, but the child could not be saved.
