Why the United States is not prepared for an escalation with Iran: opinion

The United States, despite its current defense support for Israel, will not provide further assistance if the conflict with Iran escalates, which is associated with the upcoming elections in the country. Experts note that measures to influence Iran will be limited to sanctions and intelligence support.

The director of the Center for Middle East Studies, Igor Semivolos, spoke about this in an interview with the UN, pointing out that it is important for the United States to avoid an open escalation in the context of the internal political situation.

Semivolos noted that Iran’s recent missile attack on Israel on October 1 could be perceived as revenge for Nasrallah’s death, as well as a continuation of the protracted conflict. According to him, Iran must prepare for a retaliatory attack by Israel, which will be a predictable development of events.

The expert emphasized that the outcome of the confrontation depends on the level of Iran’s air defense, as well as its ability to defend itself from attacks. He also noted that Israeli air defenses are more powerful thanks to both internal developments and US support. However, despite US assistance in defending Israel, Semivolos believes that the United States will not cooperate in retaliatory actions aimed at retaliating against Iran.

Speaking about future prospects, Semivolos expressed doubts about the United States’ willingness to escalate the conflict, especially in the context of the upcoming elections. Despite claims of “serious consequences,” concrete measures so far are limited to sanctions and intelligence. The expert also ruled out the possibility of holding peace negotiations between Iran and Israel, recalling that these countries do not maintain diplomatic relations.

Recall that on October 1 the IDF announced the interception of 180 ballistic missiles fired by Iran. Iran, in turn, reported the use of Fateh hypersonic missiles and claims that they allegedly caused damage to elements of the Israeli missile defense and destroyed several F-35 fighters.

Previously, Kursor reported that Iran attempted to inflict enormous damage on Israel.

According to experts, Iran did not use unmanned aerial vehicles or cruise missiles against Israel because it realized their uselessness against IDF air defenses.
