José Luis Bonet and Miquel Roca, honorary doctors of Abad Oliba University

The Abat Oliba CEU University today invested as honorary doctors the president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and honorary president of Freixenet, Jose Luis Bonet Ferrerand to the President of the Spanish Constitution and Honorary President of the Office of Roca Junyent, Miquel Roca Junyent. The solemn ceremony took place this afternoon at the Aula Magna of the UAO CEU, in Barcelona.

In the case of Bonet, the decision to grant him the acknowledgement It builds on its merits in the field of economics, business and commerce. Bonet Ferrer has been president of the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Spain for ten years.

Regarding Roca Junyent, we wanted to highlight its “valuable contribution» in the field of law, moral philosophy and political science. In relation to this last aspect, he stands out for being one of the seven speakers of the Spanish Constitution (1978) and for having joined the Commission that drafted the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia (1979).

The investiture as honorary doctors of Bonet and Roca takes place in the context of the celebration of fifty years of existence of Abat Oliba CEU as an institution university.

In his acceptance speech, Bonet highlighted the importance of Fairs and Chambers, as public institutions whose base is made up of businessmen and leaders, in which the value of public-cooperation is illustrated. private and whose role in the economic promotion and development of the country is decisive. . “In a country of SMEs “Like Spain, the work of fairs in terms of innovation and internationalization of businesses is fundamental,” said José Luis Bonet, referring to Alimentaria, the international food fair of the Fira de Barcelona, which he himself presided over the years 2002 and 2022 and which she considers “a reflection of the diversity of Spanish gastronomy”.

Reflection on the role that the Law must play in society presided over the Parliament of Miquel Roca. In an academic context, he spoke of the need and “explain the law“, because “ignoring what the rights and freedoms proclaimed by our system are invites us not to respect them”. Also because “it is only by knowing our own rights that we can understand why those of others must be respected “. As he defended, society as a whole must imbibe the value of the defense and preservation of law. When this value is “minimized or trivialized”, History shows that “discord and the confrontation is served.”

These ideas are naturally linked to a fundamental part of Roca’s biography, namely his status as a rapporteur of the Constitution Spanish, that’s why “you called me here today.” “I feel very honored by this association, and even more so at a time when it seems entirely appropriate to reiterate the defense of the Constitution and its values,” he proclaimed.

Values to which he admitted to being “addicted” and which are condensed in the notion of consensus, expressed in the desire “to agree and not to agree”. It was “not only about respecting difference, but also about making it possible”. Even today, when voices are heard that “pose new goals which coexist poorly with the values that we consecrated together in 1978″, it must be remembered that “it is precisely these values which protect the free expression of these objectives”. In short, that of Roca was a demand of this country which learned to live with freedom and respect, in a time, like today, where there are days that “make us believe that we will once again allow ourselves to be tempted by the genetics of confrontation and discord.

The professor of applied economics at the UAO CEU and honorary rector of this university, Juan Coronapresented the merits of Bonet Ferrer to be invested as an honorary doctor. In his laudatio, he referred to the academic and commercial side of Bonet and the vocation of service that he has developed intensely since his position as president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

Roca Junyent’s laudatio was given by the professor of criminal law and also honorary rector of the UAO CEU, Carlos Pérez del Valle. De Roca underlined his almost genetic proximity to the political sphere and his attachment to his status as a jurist, a facet which marked his way of acting in public life. This is what happened when, at only 37 years old, he participated in the presentation of the Constitution, where he behaved as a “jurist convinced of the dominant mission of the Law”.

The ceremony ended with interventions from the Rector of the UAO CEU, Rafael Rodríguez-Ponga, and the Grand Chancellor of the UAO CEU and President of the CEU Educational Group, Alfonso Bullon of Mendoza. The latter underlined the “decisive role of Roca” as “guarantor of our fundamental rights and freedoms” and the contribution of Bonet, who at the head of the Chamber of Commerce defends “the interests of our companies on the international scene”.
