Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah’s strategic assets and command structure throughout Lebanon have significantly weakened its ability to engage in high-intensity combat in the short term.
One of the leading contenders to replace Nasrallah is Hashem Safi al-Din, who heads Hezbollah’s executive council. It maintains close ties with Iran and is actively participating in the group’s reorganization process, which is coordinated with the Iranian authorities. This reorganization is intended to prepare for further confrontation with Israel in order to preserve the organization’s combat capability and survivability.
According to the report, Hezbollah links its actions in Lebanon to the situation in the Gaza Strip, and all key decisions on a possible response depend on Iran’s position. Tehran is expected to decide to respond independently or in coordination with other allies along the “axis of resistance.” Despite the tensions, Iranian authorities have so far refrained from directly declaring their intention to respond to the assassination of Nasrallah and other top commanders.
The authors of the report emphasize that Iran must adapt to the new geopolitical situation and act taking into account the new realities, while avoiding a regional war.
In addition, Tehran seeks to resume negotiations with Western countries over its nuclear program to ease international sanctions. However, the lack of a quick response to the liquidation of Nasrallah or the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh could undermine Iran’s influence among its allies along the “axis of resistance”, creating risks for its position in the Middle East.
