In Estonia, the school named after Pushkin, founded more than a century ago, was renamed

The Tartu Alexander Pushkin School will be renamed the Tartu Jogentag School from January 1, 2025. This was reported by the ERR portal.

The new name was chosen through an open competition that received approximately 300 proposals.

“Tartu Jogentag School is a unique and special name that conveys the beauty of the ancient Estonian language, highlighting the rich history and culture of the region. The word “Jogentag” refers to the historical name of the land beyond the Emajõgi River, which connects the school with the geography of the city of Tartu. – explained the school director Alina Brazulienė.

In addition, the new name also symbolizes the completion of the school’s transition to teaching in Estonian, which began in the city in 2022, added the deputy mayor of Tartu. Lemmit Kaplinsky.

It is clarified that the word “Jogentag” means “beyond the river.”

The publication notes that the history of the school dates back to 1899, when a gymnasium for girls named after Pushkin was opened in Tartu. During its existence, the school changed its name and address several times. For the past ten years, the Tartu Alexander Pushkin School has been the main school with city-wide enrollment and teaching in Russian.
