Competition rejected Atlético allegations pointing to Courtois for violent derby events

This Wednesday, a strong rumor was confirmed: the Competition committee of the RFEF orders the partial closure of stadium Metropolitan for the violent events that occurred during the derby. The sanction will be three matches, accompanied by a fine of 45,000 euros for the Atletico Madrid for the behavior of some of their supporters in the lower stands of the South Fundwhich will be the area affected by the sentence.

“Although this is the action of a non-representative part of the club’s supporters, sufficient measures have not been adopted by Atlético de Madrid to avoid such serious incidents in the mass action itself and in its result or, at least, “the measures that were adopted were not ideal for a particular rivalry match in a top professional competition like the First Division of one of the most important leagues in the world”, states the Commission in its resolution.

An appeal may be lodged against this decision before the Appeal Committee within a maximum period of ten working days, starting this Wednesday. The sentence falls on Atleti for the throwing of objects, including several lighters, which suffered Thibaut Courteousgoalkeeper Real Madridrepeatedly forcing the game to stop for almost 20 minutes.

In the resolution, the Commission rejects the request made Diego Pablo Simeone to sanction Courtois, for alleged provocations in the stands, and reveals that, in its allegations, Atleti highlighted previous acts (the gestures of the Belgian goalkeeper) to avoid or reduce the sanction of the partial closure of the Metropolitano.

“In any case, these objective facts are absolutely unacceptable and the allegations of Club Atlético de Madrid regarding any type of previous acts cannot be admitted. [no hace mención directa a la celebración de Courtois, pero apunta a ello]which would in no way be likely to justify them”, underlines Concurrence in its judgment.

It is Simeone’s words that highlight the possibility of Courtois’ punishment: “People don’t react just because they react, they react for something. That doesn’t justify it being fair, but be careful, we can also start sanctioning.” what we wear.” to the people, we incite the people and, since we are protagonists, nothing happens […] This does not justify, but be careful with what we generate. Punishing the one who provokes is how we balance.”

Regarding Atlético de Madrid’s allegations regarding the identification of a certain person and making the authorities available to collaborate in the identification of other possible perpetrators of the events, the Committee considers that this is ” non-preventive, and therefore reactive, measures. acts committed following the fait accompli, which have already produced serious sporting consequences and media repercussions which are at this stage irreparable.

Violent events

The Balearic referee’s report Mateo Busquets Ferrer indicated that after the Real Madrid goal, in the 64th minute, several objects – three lighters and a bottle of water – were thrown into said area, without touching the goalkeeper, and therefore activated the protocol in this situation to broadcast over loudspeaker a message to stop the launches.

Given this repetition, the warning was issued again in the 65th minute and two minutes later, “due to the continued repetition of throwing objects”, the match was temporarily suspended and the teams were awarded the ordered to retire to the locker room. The match resumed 17 minutes later without any incident until the end.

The events occurred after Courtois, a former red and white player, celebrated reaching the goal of Eder Military for Real Madrid, who placed their team at the top of the standings. Just before the Brazilian defender’s goal, part of the stand who then threw objects at the Belgian goalkeeper chanted “Courtois to die”.

From the government at a time Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pillar Happinessas president of Superior Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Rodriguez Uribesstressed the adoption of severe sanctions against those responsible for the events once all the information has been collected.
