Young Convicts: The shocking STATISTICS of children who commit crimes

In recent days we frequently come across news about serious crimes committed by teenagers. It should be noted that deaths also occurred in these incidents. The latest incident involving teenagers was reported yesterday in Sabunchu district. A 16-year-old teenager was murdered by his partner with a cutting tool.

This is the third bloody incident involving teenagers this week. Previously, incidents of stabbing among teenagers occurred in the Khachmaz and Shamkir regions.

The website Modern.az attempted to investigate teen-related crime statistics.

If you analyze official statistics, you can see that the number of juvenile crimes has increased in recent years.

According to information obtained from the State Statistics Committee, 494 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 committed crimes in 2023. For comparison, let us note that in 2022, the number of juvenile offenders was 433.

According to official statistics, theft is the main crime committed by teenagers. Next comes serious intentional damage to health.

There has also been an increase in the number of young people committing intentional homicide and attempted homicide.

The number of minors convicted has also increased in accordance with the dynamics of crime growth.

In 2023 alone, 310 adolescents between 14 and 17 years old were convicted for various criminal incidents.

In 2022, the number of adolescents convicted was 258.

There appears to have been a significant increase in the number of teenagers convicted.

Another sad fact is that among minors convicted of different crimes there are both girls and boys. For example, 4 of the 310 minors sentenced last year were girls. Another problem is that the vast majority of those convicted are children of families with two parents.

According to official statistics, the majority of convicted minors are those whose freedom is restricted. Thus, the freedom of 113 adolescents was restricted in 2021, 127 in 2022 and 153 in 2023.

In the following tables we present the statistics of young people aged 14 to 17 who have committed a crime and convicted young people aged 14 to 17:
