Wars, new balance of power and uncertainties. Today, Western democracies face a global scene characterized by widespread conflict. That is why, in this context, King Felipe called not allow the European Union to be defeated or weakened, this begins “a decisive legislature”.
This Thursday, Felipe VI inaugurated the La Toja-Vínculo Atlántico Forum, which, in its sixth edition, will reflect on “new political cycles and the new normality”. In this “new normal”, Don Felipe immersed himself by adopting the title of the forum: “Europe risks its future”. “And if the future is our greatest challenge, the present is our main task, in which “There is no room for inaction or paralysis, nor for thoughtless improvisation,” thought about it.
“In this context of ‘new normality’, phenomena that we analyze and describe so much, but which we still do not know how to manage well, “The EU, and each of its members in its corresponding part, must provide answers”, the king insisted on his second trip to Galicia in a few days.
In this sense, he recalled some words that he himself had said last June during the presentation of the Charles V European Prize to the former President of the Italian Council of Ministers Mario Draghi: “We are living in decisive moments where the world and Europe are being defined. that we are going to live. Times that require courage, solidarity and commitment to face great challenges.
I insist a lot on the fact that Faced with this “new complexity, there is no room for inaction”, Because “concern and not conformism” is “the engine of growth”, Felipe VI wanted to avoid in his speech “an overly negative vision” of the current situation. Because if it is true that Europe is facing “moments of uncertainty”, it is no less true that Spain has “great challenges” ahead of it and “reasons for confidence”.
Don Felipe spoke these words in the presence, among others, of the Vice-President of the European Union and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell; the President-elect of the European Council and former Portuguese Prime Minister, Antònio Costa; and the former presidents of the Spanish government, Felipe González and Mariano Rajoy.
In particular, Don Felipe presented Josep Borrell with the Foro La Toja-Josep Piqué Prize, of which he highlighted their work to “maintain consensus within the European Union in the face of great challenges”. And he added that the EU vice-president “spared no effort” to ensure that the EU maintained its “capacity for action, influence and representation” in the world.
