The Rojas host this Friday and Saturday the play ‘Los Bandos de Verona’ by the tolerant playwright Francisco de Rojas

The culture and heritage advisor, Ana Pérezpresented this Thursday the piece “The sides of Verona” by the Toledo playwright Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, adapted by Eduardo Galán and which will be performed this Friday 4 and Saturday 5 at 8:00 p.m. at the Teatro de Rojas.

A “very funny comedy in verse, based on the 16th century story of Pyramus and Thisbe, a work on which William Shakespeare also based himself to write Romeo and Juliet,” declared the councilor.

The plot of the work focuses on the difficulties encountered by the protagonists, Alejandro Romeo Montesco and Julia Capelete, to establish a romantic relationship aimed at marriage due to the cruel confrontation of the two families. In this adaptation, the humor of the plot and the interventions of the characters were highlighted, being faithful to the meaning of the original text.

The works manager is Daniel Alonso of Santosplaywright, actor and director with numerous projects behind him with classic theatrical works “Fuenteovejuna” or “The Knight of Olmedo” and who has just received the award for best director in New York for “La Monja Alférez” and won the award for best theater actor in 2022 for “La Vida es Sueño”.

Ana Pérez also spoke about one of the main actors, Canco Rodriguez, “who plays two characters, the Guardainfante and Andrés Capellete and who is well known for television series, films, musicals and other plays and who on this occasion will make us laugh a lot.”

For his part, the director Daniel Alonso He thanked the reception of the play in the city, precisely at the Theater of the author of “The Bandos of Verona”, “one of the great playwrights of our country of whom Toledo must be proud”.

Alonso encouraged people to come see this play, “which Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla adapted from the classic Romeo and Juliet, and he does this reinterpretation from a comedic point of view, because he was a real thug, and we want also invite the public to come and have fun, as much as Rojas Zorrilla surely enjoyed while writing it,” he noted.

The actor Canco Rodríguez showed his enthusiasm to perform for the first time on the stages of the Toledo theater and, in doing so, also with a work by the author from Toledo, he hopes that spectators “will enjoy this classic, as much than the actors”. that I do.” “It’s been a gift for me to be a part of it, even though at first I didn’t think I could perform in verse, and eventually, not only did I succeed, but now I’m passionate about it. by that,” he said.
