The former president of the government Felipe Gonzalez proposed this Thursday to “reset the Constitution of 78 to preserve the territorial integrity” of Spain. The historic leader of the PSOE called for “modifications” and “reforms” of the Magna Carta that “preserve a greater good: the territorial integrity of what we call Spain, which is a nation-state”.
“Now, are we clear? I don’t think so, because there is determine the opposing forces that territorial integrity be preserved”, he said in his speech at the La Toja Forum, organized in the Galician city.
“Where was the Constitution voted for the most? In Catalonia,” he recalled.
González stressed that it is the parties that have become polarized, and not society, that wants agreements, and urged political forces to reach more agreements.
“No matter how you feel, state agreements need to be made. Otherwise, we’re all going to fall by the wayside,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of the two main forces, the PSOE and the PP, because they are necessary to carry out policies such as the tax reform. He also wondered what interest a pro-independence force could have in there being governance in Spain, although he immediately replied: “Zero.”
The former president focused on Senate to explain that it is not a chamber of territorial representation, reaffirming that it could not be one at the time the constitutional text was approved.
According to him, in this period of history there was success because politicians coincided with the aspirations of citizens, who “wanted to be children of democracy and not grandchildren of civil war.” .
Rajoy supports González
González’s comments were supported by former President Mariano Rajoy, who said he was completely agree with them.
