“I became a circus”

The former president of the government, Mariano Rajoy, did not appreciate the new caps on single-use plastic bottles. He made this clear at the La Toja Forum, which he himself has directed since leaving the government, and in front of a prestigious audience: former President Felipe González and former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, who has just been proposed as the new President of the European Council by the Social Democratic Group.

In a speech that provoked laughter from his former Portuguese counterpart or gestures of approval from his socialist predecessor, Rajoy expressed his dissatisfaction with the new plastic caps, now attached to bottles, criticizing the fact that there is “too much regulation” in the EU. .

“A month ago I had a little bottle of this and I saw that I couldn’t… there was no way to get this out. I started drinking… I got crazy… and I said: Hey, but these bottles are all…? And now they’re all like that. Well, it’s a European Union regulation. I think… that makes things very difficult,” explained Rajoy to the laughter of part of the public present at the Forum, inaugurated by King Felipe VI.

The European regulation builds on a directive approved in 2019 by the European Parliament and came into force in July this year and requires traders to attach the cap to the packaging of plastic bottles. The standard therefore aims to reduce the use of plastic by preventing the loss of these caps and facilitating their recycling. Spain is precisely one of the pioneering countries of this new format and, since 2022, some brands have started to market single-use bottles with attached caps.
