Ukrainian forces have secured a significant tactical advantage over the Russian military thanks to their actions in the Kursk region, experts say. Since the beginning of a large-scale conflict, this is the first time that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have gained such significant superiority, because in this region they do not need to defend a single Russian settlement.
Business Insider writes about this.
Experts emphasize that the Kursk operation gave the Ukrainian military the freedom to choose the most advantageous points for combat operations and withdraw from their positions when unfavorable conditions arise. This significantly changes the format of the fight, making it more effective, notes Michael Bohnert of the RAND Corporation, according to Business Insider.
Unlike previous operations, in which Ukrainian troops were forced to stubbornly hold settlements, which, for example, was clearly demonstrated in Bakhmut, in the Kursk region the Armed Forces of Ukraine had the opportunity to use new tactics, choosing suitable positions for defense and building fortifications.
According to experts, a large-scale war had previously put Ukraine in a difficult position, as the main hostilities took place on its territory. However, in August 2024 the situation changed: Ukrainian forces can now use the terrain for tactical maneuvers, allowing them to avoid unnecessary losses.
Analyst William Alberk of the Stimson Center also highlighted that the Russian military faces increased defense by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the most vulnerable areas. In his opinion, the Ukrainian forces are capable of laying “traps” and forming “death zones”, which slows down the advance of the Russian side and creates serious difficulties on the routes of its movement.
Alberc believes that the ability to choose where and when to defend gives Ukraine an additional strategic advantage, allowing it to avoid the need to hold all points at all costs.
Previously, Kursor wrote that the Armed Forces of Ukraine could enter another region of the Russian Federation.
The expert believes that the Armed Forces of Ukraine can repeat on the territory of the Bryansk region the tactics used in the Kursk region.
