In Bolivia they open an investigation against former president Evo Morales for the rape of a minor during his mandate

An investigation has been opened against former president Evo Morales, suspected of having raped a minor during his term eight years ago, and with whom he allegedly had a daughter.

“We have learned with indignation of serious crimes that go unpunished: I am referring in particular to a girl, a girl raped when she was 15, 16 years old”declared the Minister of Justice, César Siles, to the press on Thursday, October 3. “After this rape, [la mère] She gave birth to a daughter and the father, recognized on the birth certificate, [est] Mr. Evo Morales Ayma »added the minister.

On Wednesday, a Santa Cruz judge canceled an arrest warrant for Morales. This mandate, according to excerpts leaked to the press, stated that the former president, 64, had a relationship in 2016 with a 15-year-old girl, with whom he had a daughter. The Ministry of Justice, however, did not detail the alleged facts. Prosecutor Sandra Gutiérrez, who issued this ruling, told the press this Wednesday that it had been dismissed.

Without explicitly mentioning the case, Mr. Morales reacted in X: “This does not surprise me or worry me. All neoliberal governments, including the current one, have threatened, persecuted, imprisoned and tried to kill me. »

Five judicial proceedings

Morales governed the country between 2006 and 2019 and then facilitated the electoral victory of Luis Arce, who had been his Minister of Economy. Today in conflict, the two leaders dispute the leadership of the left-wing party in power and the candidacy of this formation for the presidential elections of August 2025.

Morales wants to run even though the courts have barred him from doing so and is trying, with the support of a wing of his party, to get the courts to relent.

His former interior minister, Carlos Romero, said this week that the government had initiated no fewer than five legal proceedings against Morales and that he was living under the protection of farmers in his Chapare stronghold in the center of the country.
