If small black spots with a paste consistency appear on your clothes after washing, you may have a dirty washing machine filter. The majority of Spain’s population lives in an area with hard water – with a high concentration of salts – which can affect our cleaning routine. Our devices always need maintenance, but in territories with higher water hardness we need to be more consistent. This is why we recommend cleaning your washing machine filter every two to three months.
Before cleaning our washing machine, you should know that the method changes depending on the type of appliance we use. Pay attention to whether your washing machine is front loading – with the drum on one side of the machine – or top loading – with the drum on top. All that remains is to locate the filter:
- Front loading washing machines: The waste filter is usually located at the bottom of the drum, on one of the two sides. This is usually a compartment with a tab that opens.
- Top loading washing machine: It is located in the same location as front-loading washing machines, but they are usually screwed on and removable.
How to clean the washing machine filter
Cleaning the washing machine filter is very simple. In fact, most modern washing machines have a self-cleaning program, which will save you some of the maintenance of this device. If your washing machine is equipped with a self-wash button, simply read the appliance’s instruction manual to find out how this system works and press the self-wash button or automatic cleaningIn English. Doing this from time to time will keep the internal components of the washing machine in good condition. It also serves to prevent bad odors and mold that accumulate wash after wash.
Some machines, even if they do not have a specific button for self-washing, include this function, but to activate it, you must press two buttons at the same time. If you cannot find this function, you can also clean the interior with a program at maximum temperature without anything, then another at medium temperature with baking soda in the box and two glasses of cleaning vinegar or white vinegar from apple in the drum.
Although self-cleaning is very useful, you may need to pay special attention to the filter. Before you begin, place a cloth, towel, or container under the pump filter to prevent water spillage. Even if you have drained all the water from the washing machine, there is still some water left:
- Front loading washing machines: The first thing to do is to remove the filter and run it through lukewarm water. Likewise, the bucket in which both the detergent and fabric softener are placed should be cleaned with soap and then wiped with a cloth soaked in cleaning vinegar. Door rubber bands are another source of germs and dirt, so they should also be cleaned with this vinegar to prevent mold and mildew from forming and clothes smelling bad.
- Top loading washing machine: Turn the filter knob counterclockwise and remove it. Clean the filter with running water and a soft brush. Replace the filter and screw it in clockwise until it locks into position.
After that, the washing machine drum will be finished. To clean the drum, you must first make sure it is empty. Next, add about half a cup of vinegar to the detergent bucket or, if you prefer, you can place it in the same drum. Then select a long wash cycle with hot water (90º). This process will disinfect and descale the dirt accumulated inside the washing machine.
Once the wash cycle is finished, use a clean cloth to dry the inside of the drum, door and rubber bands of the washing machine, where residue usually accumulates. It is also helpful to leave the washing machine door open after each use to allow ventilation and prevent mold from forming.
Recommendations after using the washing machine
Now that the filter is clean, it is important to keep the washing machine clean. A few simple habits will ensure that your washing machine will always be perfect and that maintaining your appliance will be easier.
- leave the door open: Keep the washer door open after each use to allow the interior to dry completely. This helps prevent moisture buildup, which can encourage the growth of mold and bacteria.
- Dry the detergent dispenser– Clean and dry the detergent and fabric softener dispenser to prevent residue buildup and odors. Make sure it is completely dry before closing it.
- Check and clean the filter: After each use, check the washing machine filter. Remove any accumulated hair, lint or debris. This helps maintain good water flow and prevent drainage problems.
- Clean the tires: Wipe a dry or slightly damp cloth over the door rubbers to remove all traces of detergent and moisture. This prevents mold buildup and extends the life of the rubbers.
- Close the water tap: If your washing machine is connected to a water tap, turn off the tap after each use to avoid possible leaks and damage.
- Replace the distributor: Be sure to place it properly after cleaning to avoid spills and ensure proper operation.
- Carry out regular cleaning– Schedule regular washing machine cleanings, such as the vinegar wash cycle, to keep the drum and components clean.
