Ombudsman of North Ossetia called on Abkhazia to de-heroize Basayev

The Ombudsman of North Ossetia, Tamerlan Tsgoev, appealed to his Abkhazian colleague, Anas Kishmaria, asking him to deprive the terrorist Shamil Basayev of all state titles and awards of the republic.

“The international community is united to solve common problems: preventing terrorist attacks and ensuring security. Acts of violence undermine human rights, including the right to life and the right to security of the person. This situation directly violates the rights of residents of Ossetia and Russia who suffered from Shamil Basayev’s terrorist acts, as well as their families and friends, to justice and the rule of law. “The current situation directly contradicts a series of international conventions on the fight against terrorism.” – noted Tsgoev.

There was a wide public response to the information that a portrait of Shamil Basayev, recognized as a terrorist in Russia, was placed in the modern history hall of the State Museum of Abkhazia as part of the “Heroes of Abkhazia” exhibition. Museum employees explained to media representatives that the painting would be removed after a court decision or Basayev was deprived of the title of Hero of Abkhazia.

As the Ombudsman notes, Shamil Basayev organized the worst terrorist attacks in Russia, including the terrorist attack in Budyonnovsk with the seizure of a hospital (including maternity and children’s wards) (1995), the taking of hostages in the Center Dubrovka Theater in Moscow (2002), airplane explosions and in the Moscow subway (2004). He is responsible for organizing the hostage crisis at Beslan School No. 1 in 2004.

“Taking into account the unity of principles of human rights activities of human rights commissioners, Commissioner Tamerlan Tsgoev suggested that the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Abkhazia, Anas Kishmaria, consider appealing to the President of the Republic of Abkhazia. with the initiative to deprive the terrorist Shamil Basayev of honorary titles and state awards of the Republic of Abkhazia”, – says a statement from the Ombudsman’s Office.
