UN puts death toll at 70 in attack by armed gang in western Haiti

The spokesperson for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Thameen al Kheetan, placed at least 70 dead in an attack carried out Thursday by the Gran Grif criminal gang against the population of the commune of Pont-Sandélocated west of Haitian incident which is part of the strong wave of violence sweeping across the country.

“We are horrified by the attack that occurred on Thursday in the town of Pont Sandé. Members of the Gran Grif gang used automatic weapons to fired on the population and killed at least 70 people, including three children” he said in a statement.

According to UN sources, the attack also resulted in 16 injuredincluding two gang members shot during a clash with Haitian security forces, and a total ofe 45 houses and 34 vehicles burned.

Al Kheetan, who noted that the violence has forced a large number of residents to leave the city, called on the international community to increase its logistical and financial support for the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, led by Kenya and which has the support of the United Nations even if it is not a mission of the organization.

It is crucial that authorities carry out thorough investigations on this attack to bring those responsible to justice and guarantee reparation to the victims and their families,” he said.
