DGT campaign in the province of Toledo on distracted driving

A new special surveillance campaign by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) begins this Monday and will last until Sunday October 13. On this occasion, he will focus on monitoring and controlling distractions, one of the main risk factors for road accidents.

It appears as a concomitant circumstance in 31% of fatal road accidents. The cause was distracted driving, mainly due to improper use of cell phones, GPS navigators or other devices. For example, using a cell phone increases the risk of an accident fourfold, which is comparable to using it under the influence of alcohol.

Actions such as dialing a cell phone number, answering a phone call, reading or replying to a WhatsApp, lighting a cigarette, or tuning the radio while driving involves taking your eyes off the road for a certain period of time, during which the vehicle is traveling without control and circumstances may arise causing a serious accident

Campaigns to control and monitor risk factors associated with distractions are part of their importance for road safety, both in increasing the risk of driving accidents and in increasing the severity of injuries.

Both the agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and the local police forces of Seseña, Añover de Tajo, Yepes, Recas, Borox, Las Ventas de Retamosa and Villacañas, who until now are the ones who have communicated their support for the campaign, will intensify surveillance in their respective areas of competence.

The last campaign on this theme in the province was developed a year ago, between October 9 and 15, 2023. It benefited from the collaboration of the local police of the municipalities of Seseña, Talavera de la Reina, Illescas, Toledo , Esquivias, Bargas, Las Ventas de Retamosa and Añover de Tajo. They checked 5,470 vehicles and filed 60 complaints. For its part, the Civil Guard Traffic Group checked 5,182 vehicles in the province and filed 87 complaints, according to the DGT.
