An international consortium should build a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan – EADaily, October 6, 2024 – Politics news, Russian news

If the idea of building a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan is approved, it would have to be built by an international consortium. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

A video of the president’s speech was published by his advisor, the press secretary of the head of state. Berik Uali.

“This is not a simple issue, the government must analyze it and hold appropriate negotiations. But my personal view on this issue is that an international consortium consisting of global companies with the most advanced technologies should operate in Kazakhstan. Well then, as they say, life will tell.” – said.

Tokayev also assured that the authorities will fulfill the will of the country’s citizens expressed in the referendum.

“Without a doubt, today will go down in history. Our citizens have to choose between being a nuclear power plant or not. A referendum is a very effective mechanism of direct democracy. Whatever decision the people make, the State will be guided by their will. I am sure that the right decision will be made. Indeed, this is a significant event. Therefore, I support holding a referendum.” – said.

The territory of the village of Ulken, Zhambyl district, Alma-Ata region, was recognized as the preferred area for the construction of a nuclear power plant. Kazakh authorities are considering several possible contractors: the Chinese company CNNC, the South Korean KHNP, Rosatom and the French EDF. The participation of a consortium of suppliers is not excluded.

As reported EADaily A referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant is being held in Kazakhstan today. The ballot contains a question: “Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?” Voters will have to answer this question: “yes, I agree” or “no, I disagree.”

A referendum is recognized as having been held if more than 50% of the 12.2 million citizens included in the voting lists participate.
