On October 10, 2023, Israel’s massive bombing of Gaza began. Our colleague Kayed Hammad, Gazan producer and translator, went live to report from the inside: “I speak as a father who has a family of six; I am locked in my house,” he said then.
At that moment he was calm. But just three days later, the bombings intensified Kayed began to worry about the corpses. “They smell very bad,” he stressed. And at that time, the dead numbered only in the dozens, and the UNRWA schools were still standing.
A week later, reality began to show its true face, with “hospitals, schools and universities bombed,” as Kayed told laSexta. Everything has exploded, and it’s starting to take its toll on our colleague, who has difficulty even speaking: “Before, a kilo of rice cost two euros and now it costs 40“, he lamented last March.
Finally, May 24 came, when his son died. Since then, her family has been sleeping together all night. “If a bomb falls, let it kill us all togetherso that no one suffers”, he admits. This year, he had to make decisions and learn hard lessons: “I learned that human beings are stronger than we can think”, says Kayed.
Furthermore, also had deep disappointments. “The West always warms our heads with democracy and human rights. It makes me sick,” says Kayed who, a year after the start of the war, continues to live under bombings.
