COP29 can act as a defender of the rights of colonies that suffer an environmental disaster

The Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) consistently focuses on solving global environmental problems and has served as a platform to discuss climate change issues. However, the holding of this event in Azerbaijan caused political pressure against our country. Under the influence of Western countries, especially the United States, international organizations and media continue to spread misinformation and false accusations against Azerbaijan.

The politicization of COP29 is an attempt to divert attention from major environmental issues and undermine Azerbaijan’s global reputation. First of all, the United States is one of the countries that causes the most damage to the environment. This country remains the largest oil producer in the world and a major participant in armed conflicts. Despite this, the United States devotes minimal resources to combating climate change and prefers to focus public attention on political manipulation rather than real environmental action. While the whole world hopes that the United States and developed countries will invest more in climate policy, the West, on the contrary, is trying to divert attention from solving environmental problems and use COP29 as a means of pressure on States.

One of the main topics to be discussed at COP29 may be the impact of the military industry on the climate. The military industry is estimated to account for 6% of global waste, but this figure is likely much higher. Due to a lack of transparency, many countries, including the United States, are reluctant to reveal information about the environmental damage of their military operations. Western countries continue to wage unjust wars in various regions of the world, seriously contributing to the destruction of natural resources and ecosystems, as well as global warming.

COP29 can be an important platform to increase the responsibility of arms producing and exporting countries. This topic can lead to serious debate, as the effects of wars on the climate are often overlooked in international debates. At the same time, the fate of Western countries, especially the United States and France, whose natural resources are exploited without taking into account the environmental consequences, as a result of neocolonialism, may also be a topic of discussion at COP29. COP29 can provide a platform for people who continue to suffer from colonial policies to advance their legitimate demands. Because many former colonial states still suffer the consequences of neocolonial policies that negatively affect their natural resources and climate.

Thus, the politicization of COP29 can lead to the discussion of other global problems. Within the framework of the conference, issues such as decolonization, the impact of war and weapons on ecology can be raised. For example, topics such as the exploitation of natural resources and the violation of the rights of local residents in French overseas territories can be discussed.

Despite difficult geopolitical conditions and constant pressure from Western countries, Azerbaijan is trying to make a real contribution to global efforts to combat climate change. The country is already implementing clean technologies and developing renewable energy sources, demonstrating its commitment to international climate agreements. Azerbaijan is ready to offer constructive solutions and defend dialogue, which will ensure a more effective fight against global environmental problems, avoiding the politicization of this important event.
